The Ministry of Fisheries for New Zealand banned bottom trawling and dredging on 19 seamount's with the NZ EEZ, including the Chatham Rise, sub-antarctic waters and the east and west coasts of the northern part of North Island.

This protection has been put into place as a precautionary measure, especially since scientists found seamounts in the South Tasman Sea has been so heavily fished that only an estimated 3-4% of coral cover remained.
